Yasin Nasser and co-driver Ali Katumba put the spotlight on Uganda with their good and seasoned performance in the last round of the African Rally Championship (ARC) in the TRACN4 Rally of South Africa in Dullstroom through the weekend of 26 and 27 November 2021.
The Moil Rally team put on a really seasoned performance in South Africa in their Subaru Impreza GVB R4 as the ARC came to a close. Throughout the weekend, Nasser and Katumba kept a steady pace and by the end of it all, they had sealed victory in this race as South Africa’s Toyota Gazoo Racing’s Guy Botteril and co-driver Simon Vacy-Lyle crashed out in their Toyota Etios R4 leaving the number one spot open. Nasser and co-driver Katumba did a total time of 2:27:45.5. Botteril and co-driver crashed out in SS5 and had a DNF. Nasser participated in five of the six championship rounds in Kenya where he came in tenth, Tanzania where he placed third, Zambia he placed third, Rwanda where he came in fifth, and this one in South Africa, he won.
Given that this also served as a National Rally Championship for the South African drivers, it meant that in the ARC category, Botteril and Vacy-Lyle left Nasser and Katumba in first place and given them a second place position overall in the championship standings with 96points behind winner Carl Tundo/Timothy Jessop who sealed their victory after winning the Rwanda rally with 120points.
In third place on the ARC standings, was Guy Botteril/Simon Vacy-Lyle with 73points, Kenya’s Karan Patel with forty eight points in fourth place and closing the top five was Rwanda’s Giancarlo Davite with thirty four points. The only other Ugandan driver to make the top ten was Jas Mangat and co-driver Joseph Kamya who came in the ninth position with twenty-one points. The championship resumes in 2022 in January in Ivory Coast.
Given that this was also scoring as a national round for South African drivers, Theuns Joubert and co-driver Schalk van Heerden in their Toyota Yaris came in first place with a time of 1:05:07.6. Nico Nienaber co-driven by Gert Nienaber in their Toyota Etios came in second place at 1:07:16.5 with a time difference of 2:08.9. In third place was Chris Coertse co-driven by Greg Godrich in their Hyundai 120 R4 with a time of 1:08:15.8.
