As we edge closer to the long-awaited WRC Safari rally coming late this June, Uganda is hoping to have a spot to shine. The Federation of Motorsports Uganda (FMU) had earlier in May given the green light to seven drivers to represent the country.
Dipu Ruparelia writing to WRC Safari rally organizers, “This is to inform you that seven drivers have been cleared by FMU to participate in the WRC Safari rally, any assistance rendered to them will be highly appreciated.”
On Monday 31st May, WRC released the final entry list for the Safari rally, and representing team Uganda are; on count 32, three-time National Rally Champion titleholder, Ronald Ssebuguzi with his co-driver Anthony Mugambwa in their Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X, on count 35, current reigning champion Yasin Nasser and Ali Katumba co-driver, Duncan Mubiru and his co-driver Musa Nsubuga, Hassan Alwi and Kenya’s James Mwangi on counts 43 and 45 respectively all driving Subaru Imprezza. Last but not least is Walubi Kepher and Sirajih Kyambadde on count 47 in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X.
The long-anticipated Safari rally is scheduled for 23-27 June and the excitement is building up as the preparations get finalized in the provinces of Naivasha and Nakuru where the stages will be held. The locals are looking forward to getting sightings on international drivers like current champion lead Sebastien Ogier who is going to retire this year, Elfyn Evans, and the French man Thierry Neuville. This is a real great opportunity for African drivers to compete alongside the internationals and also showcase the beauty of the African landscape and amazing wildlife.
