Six Ugandan crews are set to take part in the first event on the Rwanda National rally Championship (RNC) calendar scheduled to take place this weekend from 24-26 March. It will take place in the southern province of Rwanda in Huye; the rally is also called the Huye rally.
Representing team Uganda will be Fred Busulwa Kitaka and co-driver Mildred Kibuuka in their Subaru Impreza, Innocent Bwamiki and co-driver Hamza Lwanga in their Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 9, Moustapha Mukasa and co-driver Luggya Pius in their Subaru Impreza, Didas Matsiko and co-driver Francis Wamala in their Subaru Impreza, Joshua Muwanguzi with co-driver Ritah Nakigozi in their Subaru Impreza, and Isaac Ssozi with co-driver Jackson Serwanga in their Subaru Impreza.
The event was last held in 2019 and was won by Rwanda’s Jean-Claude Gakwaya with co-driver Jean-Claude Mugabo in their Subaru Impreza in 2:19:41. It did not run in 2020 and 2021 due to the covid-19 pandemic. Musa Kabega is the most successful Ugandan driver to take part in the popular event having won it in 2018 and 2017 but will not take part this year due to business commitments.
Burundi will also field five crews that will be captained by Imitiaz Awan Din, his co-driver will be Rukundo Alain, as he will be competing on familiar ground having taken part in the same event several times.
Jean-Claude Gakwaya is set to also take part representing Rwanda in hopes of winning the event. Rwanda’s Giancarlo Davite has won the event thrice; in 2015 with co-driver Semana Fabrice in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X, in 2013 with co-driver Sylvia Vindevogel, and in 2011 still with Vindevogel in a Subaru Impreza N10. In 2011, Christakis Fitidis with co-driver Nzamwita Eric Maxime came in close second behind Davite.
The two days event will cover ten stages with a total competitive distance of 297.2km that will be spiced up with two-night stages on day one. Organizers of the Huye rally offer free accommodation and fuel (for recce, transport and the rally) for foreign drivers that take part in their event.
