The motorsport calendar will officially kick off competition on 29 January with the season opener of the round one in motocross at the Victoria raceway track at Garuga in Entebbe.
The motorsport season will be set to go at the newly refurbished Garuga race track this Sunday; with this being the first round of the motocross championship season for 2023. As riders get ready to defend and challenge for the number one spot, they will be treated to new race tracks this season, with competition set to take place Fort Portal, Kalisiizo-Masaka, Kasanje, Busiika, and Garuga.
It is expected that over one hundred competitors will take place in the season opener as it will also combine the first non-championship sprint of the year. Many drivers have confirmed participation and it will be a good way for them to get into the competition spirit given the National Rally Championship (NRC) first round will take place in the first week of February. Mike Mukula Jr., Jonas Kansiime, Byron Rugomoka, Oscar Ntambi, Ibrahim Lubega among others are all set to take part in the sprint.
Kenya’s Kigen Mutuma will be competing as a guest rider and this will certainly get the competitive juices flowing as well as riders like fan-favorite Fortune Ssentamu, Jude Kyle Musede, the beloved Katende brothers, Kylan Wekesa, and team captain Alestair Arthur Blick who will be defending his title as the reigning MX 1 champion three years in a row.
The national motocross championship will run eight events this year and team Uganda is hoping to dominate the Central Africa Championship (CAC) this year and battle with the rest of Africa in FIM Africa Championship in August in South Africa.
The NRC will kick off 10-12 February in Mbarara, western Uganda and it will be a new season for the drivers. The championship has seven rounds this year, and since the season ended quite dramatically (with no NRC champion being announced), this season will be a fresh start to something new.
Drivers like Jonas Kansiime and Byron Rugomoka are surely going to give it a1000% given all they went through last season. Mike Mukula Jr and Mark Lubega are also drivers that have both fans and fellow drivers attention, and it would also be interesting to see Yasin Nasser’s journey this season in his one of a kind R5. As fans eagerly await the start of this season, drivers are hoping for better this year.
