Gift Tabula Sssebuguzi and Byron Rugomoka with his co-driver Hakim Mawanda were voted motorsport personalities of the year 2022 by the Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA).
The association held its monthly assembly on Monday, 03 April 2023 at the Imperial Royale Hotel, Kampala where they were named the motorsport personalities of 2022.
For being the only Ugandan to score a first-place and hold the title of MX 85cc champion in Africa in the 2022 FIM Africa Motocross of African Nations (MXOAN), Gift Tabula Ssebuguzi held his own with riders from South Africa like Ronald Graven, Blade Tilley and Caden Weise who were on his tail, Zambia, Kenya, Tanzania, and Ugandans, he was named Motocross personality of 2022. Tabula winning the 85cc class was one of the greatest highlights of the MXOAN for Uganda and the youngster had the loudest cheers from the crowd and made history for the country by achieving that feat. The son of prominent rally driver Ronald Ssebuguzi is on to an already bright future in his very young riding career that started at just five years old back in 2014, the only Ugandan champion in the FIM MXOAN hopes to branch into motor rallying like his father.
Byron Rugomoka and co-driver Hakim Mawanda were named Motor rallying personalities; the team was the National Rally Championship (NRC) winners for the 2022 season, their first title win after finishing the season with 364 points (Rugomoka was the division two winner as well). Rugomoka competed in five events out of the seven on the calendar, he was consistent throughout and won the very last event in Rukungiri. Despite there being some issues at the end of the season, Rugomoka’s consistency brought him to that championship.
Personalities from other sports disciplines were also voted on, and all the winners will be awarded at the USPA gala on 27 May.
